All About Jewelry
What is Silver Plated?
Silver plating is a very thin layer of silver deposited onto a base metal such as copper, brass, or nickel. These jewelry pieces are more durable and generally less valuable then sterling silver jewelry pieces. If you wear the silver plated jewelry in water and don't care for it properly the plating will eventually rub or chip off. With proper care silver plated jewelry can last a very long time.
What is Sterling Silver?
Sterling Silver is at a minimum 92.5% pure silver. It is valuable and sought after as it can easily be melted down with the pure silver extracted. Sterling silver will also always be marked as such with a 925 stamped in it. Most jewelry is sterling silver instead of pure silver because pure silver is too soft to be made into jewelry.
What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is a metal alloy, made up of steel mixed with elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, silicon, aluminum, and carbon. Iron mixed with carbon to produce steel is the main component of stainless steel. Chromium is added to make it resistant to rust.
Will my jewelry tarnish? How do I take care of my jewelry?
All silver tarnishes because it reacts with the oxygen and other elements in the air. No worries! All silver, sterling or plated, can be cleaned off with a special cloth designed to remove the tarnish. You can minimize tarnish on all silver pieces by taking care of your jewelry. Do not wear your jewelry in the shower, apply hair spray and perfume before putting your jewelry on, handle your jewelry gently and store it properly (like in the adorable oyster shell box it came in...limiting it's exposure to air will slow the tarnishing...and they make cute gift boxes). All of our chains are stainless steel and will not tarnish.
